Possible Relocation of the Carmelite Monastery in Glumslöv Sweden

Our monastery was the first to be officially founded in Sweden after the Reformation. The nuns came from Belgium to Sweden in 1956. The monastery was built according to the mood of the time and was completed in 1963. The monastery is dedicated to God’s merciful love and to Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus.

For several years there have been discussions about expanding and renovating. The costs are substantial and the situation is no longer optimal, since the city has grown so close to the monastery that the tranquility is disturbed by air, train, and car traffic. In short, we can conclude that we need a larger chapel, a better-adapted infirmary, and renovation of windows, façade and wall, as well as remediation due to hazardous building materials that affect the environment and health.

We Sisters have made a strategic decision to move the monastery instead of renovating it. We are in discussions with real estate agents and advisors to find suitable land in Skåne and plan construction, relocation, and the sale of the current property in the best possible way.

Moving gives us the opportunity to build a monastery consistent with the simplicity and poverty of Carmel, according to ancient traditions. This would also allow us to design our chapel with a beauty that is timeless and more sacred.

The decision has emerged over a long period of much prayer and reflection. As we are at the beginning of this process, no timeline has yet been established. It is important that the relocation takes place in an orderly manner. We intend to finalize our plans and provide more information via our website as soon as we can. A fundraising campaign is now being launched.
